The Managing Committee of the Chania National Sports Association, realizing the great importance and concern that has been caused among sports clubs in view of the upcoming works at the National Stadium of Chania, wishes to announce the following:

The sports clubs operating at the stadium have been informed in a timely manner, specifically since January 20, when they were informed that the National Stadium would remain closed from March 23 to April 5, in order to carry out work related to the targeting of the lighting. At the same time, relevant announcements were posted in prominent places in the stadium, so that there was information not only for the clubs but also for the public visiting it.

It is noted that, until a few days ago, no official position, objection or proposal had been submitted by the unions. On the contrary, the reaction manifested itself in recent days, as the start of the works approached.

At the same time, it should be noted that the issue of the works has been raised for quite some time, as already on May 23, 2025, with a relevant document, the EAK of Chania had proposed the period from August 9 to 28, 2025 for their implementation, which was not feasible at that time. Subsequently, on December 15, 2025, the EAK of Chania received a document from the General Secretariat of Sports, according to which it was requested, within five days, to propose available fortnights until March 31, 2026, in order to enable the start of the works by the contractor.

Lighting targeting

For the execution of the works, there will be a full construction site development within the stadium. Specifically, 507 bodies (“plates”) will be placed in various places, while interventions will also be carried out on the pillars. According to the contractor, there is an increased risk of injury during the works, which does not allow the use of the space, not even partially.

The start of the works is set for Monday, March 23 and, weather permitting, their duration is estimated at 10 to 15 days.

Understanding the clubs' concerns, the Governing Committee emphasizes that the update was not made at the last minute, but two months ago. At the same time, this is a necessary intervention, as the targeting will significantly improve the performance of the floodlights and the overall operation of the stadium.
