With the EAK, supervised by the General Secretariat of the Interior, undertaking the financing of the implementation of the actions/works and the "Restoration Study", the Polytechnic University through its Technical Services preparing the necessary studies within the next semester and the Deputy Ministry of Sports supporting by finding the necessary funds, one of the most important sports infrastructures not only for Chania but also for the entire Crete is finally taking, after many years of waiting (it was planned for 2004...), the path to completion.

At the same time, the complementary works around the swimming pool will be of particular importance with the creation of an open athletics stadium, tennis, volleyball, basketball courts and alternative sports areas.

 

"Within six months, the updating of the Studies and the Tender Documents for the operation of the Swimming Pool and the creation of a sports center with a track in the surrounding area"  
The Program Agreement for the "Update of the Restoration Study of the Building and the Environment of the Akrotiri Indoor Swimming Pool", with a budget of €68,523, was signed by the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Lefteris Avgenakis, the Rector of the Technical University of Crete, Professor Evangelos Diamantopoulos, and the President of the National Sports Center of Chania, Panagiotis Svourakis, in the presence of the Member of Parliament and former Rector, Vassilis Digalakis.
The purpose of the Program Agreement is the restoration, modernization and upgrading of the Indoor Swimming Pool in Kounoupidiana, Akrotiri, Chania, which was constructed 15 years ago at the expense of the General Secretariat of Sports on the grounds of the Technical University of Crete and was never in operation! 
The goal is to create a modern sports center, utilizing the area around the Swimming Pool, which will include, among other things:
* open track and field stadium,
* tennis, volleyball, basketball courts,
* alternative sports venues, 
to serve the needs of the sports family of Chania and to host major sports events.
In this context, it is necessary to update the "Restoration Study" of the damage to the building facilities, which was prepared in 2016, during the Rectorship of Mr. Digalakis, by specialized personnel of the Technical Services Directorate of the Technical University of Crete, in order to harmonize it with the current technical specifications of the legislation for buildings and sports facilities and for its immediate implementation in practice. 
The update of the "Rehabilitation Study" will be carried out by the specialized staff of the Technical Services Directorate of the Technical University of Crete within the next 6 months and concerns:
* assignment of individual Studies (Architectural, Structural, Electromechanical, Topographic/Relief Formations) and supervision of the preparation and updating of them,
* preparation of the Project Tender Documents,
* delivery of the Updated Study to the General Secretariat of the Interior and the Chania Regional Office,
* Building Permit update for any changes that may arise from updating the Study.
The Deputy Ministry of Sports, through the Program Agreement, is committed to undertaking actions 
* finding the necessary funding for the implementation of the Studies in practice and the restoration of damage, the upgrading and renovation of the building facilities and the surrounding area of the Indoor Swimming Pool, 
* establishment of the Body for the management and operation of the Indoor Swimming Pool.
The Chania Regional Office, as supervised by the General Secretariat of the Interior, undertakes the financing of the implementation of the actions/works and the deliverable "Restoration Study".
