The amendment, which was voted in favor by the Parliament, settles the urban planning issues of the National Nautical Sports Center of Chania and paves the way for the implementation of its total renovation. It was submitted by the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, in the discussion of a draft law of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
The Deputy Minister of Sports emphasized regarding the amendment that "dWe are solving problems that have been going on for many years, as for many years absolutely no maintenance work had been done, with the exception of a few small projects during the period of Kyriakos Virvidakis. The sports family of Chania had "fed up" with empty promises and pompous announcements, without even having permits for the facilities. From 1979, when the facilities were completed, until today, more than 40 years, no substantial work had been done. Now, the Nautical Sports Center, as it operates almost unmaintained, is dangerous for the entire sports family of Chania, a prefecture without another swimming pool! Despite the huge tradition in Chania in producing top swimming and water polo champions, with participation in European and World championships, as well as in the Olympic Games. Already, since 2021, we have removed the shelter from the two training pools, due to danger. It is also necessary, and will be done immediately, to remove the canopy over the stands, which is also dangerous for the public. Our goal is the complete upgrade of this sports facility as well. Our goal is to create a new, modern, safe and functional Nautical Sports Center, as befits the sporting history of Chania. With the ordinance, we propose changing the building conditions to low coefficients (0.6) and pave the way for its reconstruction. However, if special building conditions are not immediately provided for, due to the specificities of the area, then the upgrading of the sports facility will not be possible. Therefore, we are adapting special building conditions to the existing urban planning situation, regarding the plot, which belongs to the General Secretariat of Sports and is located on the Kanari Coast, within the extension of the street plan of the city of Chania. And thus we will achieve the overall upgrade of the Nautical Sports Center. By the end of March, the Crete Development Organization - as it informed us - will have completed the Studies and Tender Documents and we will be able to announce the next steps. Today is the first brave step taken by the Mitsotakis Government and the work must be done as soon as possible, because there are many events that need to be hosted at the Chania Nautical Center.».
