The reconstruction of the former weightlifting hall, which remained closed for approximately 15 years and is located under the stands of the National Stadium of Chania, is currently underway.
Work has already begun, with the aim of making the space functional again in the coming period, so that it can accommodate weightlifting athletes, but also be used for recovery needs or other needs.
This is a pending issue of many years that is now on track for a final resolution, with the contribution of the General Secretariat of Sports. The relevant study had been included in the Public Investment Program since 2021, while in early 2024, funding was secured, the tender followed and the contractor was selected and proceeded to the start of the work.
The project is part of the contract "EAK Chania - Works to strengthen the supporting structure of the stands of the National Stadium of Chania", with a total budget of 166,063.73 euros, while, barring unforeseen circumstances, it is estimated that it will be completed by the end of 2026.

At the same time, other interventions are underway at the National Stadium of Chania, such as the renovation of changing rooms and sanitary areas, starting with the toilets located next to the cafeteria, the procurement of four houses for the accommodation of the athletics clubs, as well as maintenance work on the tartan in view of the international athletics meeting "Venizelia - Chania".
Finally, the upgrading of the surrounding area with asphalt paving is also planned, a project that will be implemented through sponsorship by businessmen Messrs. Haniotakis and Kantilierakis.
